How to be prepared for the next Ethereum Classic hard fork

Ethereum Classic welcomes back the use of 3Gb and 4Gb GPU cards for mining. Because of this comeback, ETC will make a hard fork that has a consequence on your mining. On our side, Cruxpool is ready. But on yours, are you prepared for this update ? If you are not, you will have all the details in this article to be prepared for the next Ethereum Classic hard fork.

In this article

What is this Ethereum Classic fork?

Ethereum Classic hard fork is massive for mining. This update originates from the Ethereum Classic Improvement Proposals – ECIP 1099 that has the objective to calibrate the epoch duration in the mining process. Also, called the Thanos upgrade, this enables the DAG size to be reduced for almost a half. When the Ethereum Classic blockchain reaches the block 11.700.000, the DAG size will be reduced to 2.47Gb. Thanks to this reduction, 4Gb GPU and even 3Gb GPU cards will be able to mine Ethereum Classic. This update aims to encourage miners and especially miners which have 4Gb cards to go back to mine ETC in order to increase the global hashrate. This increase will avoid future potential 51% attacks.

What is going to change for you?

The biggest change with the Thanos update is the appearance of a brand new algorithm for Ethereum Classic mining. Indeed, ETC has created a variant of the current algorithm to calibrate the epoch duration. This name is etchash and it will take the place of ethash algorithm. This algorithm change makes you use new versions of mining softwares because they have to be compliant with the new hard fork. The current versions of certain mining softwares cannot be able to mine Ethereum Classic after the Thanos update. So, you must upgrade or install a compatible version to mine ETC.

Another change with this fork is the non-support of NiceHash. As you may know, NiceHash is the biggest marketplace in the sector of rental mining. Thanks to their service, you can rent hashrate to mine any cryptocurrencies. However, NiceHash has decided to not support this update and so you will not be able to rent hash for Ethereum Classic after Thanos fork.

We have decided to not support the ETChash algorithm on NiceHash. Buyers placing orders on DaggerHashimoto marketplace and directing the hashing power to Ethereum Classic pools will sustain 100% reject shares from the pool side. However, buyers will still pay for all the shares sent from NiceHash to the pool.

Finally, this Thanos hard fork for Ethereum Classic will kick out the use of ASICs. Thanks to the new mining algorithm which integrates changes compared to the current one, ASICs will not be able to mine Ethereum Classic. So, this will become an exclusive GPU mining cryptocurrency and the hashrate will be less centralized.

How to be prepared for this update

As we said in the previous part, due to the change of the mining algorithm, you have to update or use and update mining softwares which are compliant with this new algorithm. This point is crucial because if you use another mining software or a former version, you will not be able to mine Ethereum Classic after the fork. Here is the list of compliant mining softwares :

  • lolMiner 1.12 or later
  • GMiner 2.30 or later
  • T-Rex 0.18.8 or later
  • NBMiner v33.4 or later
  • SRBMiner-Multi 0.5.6 or later
  • Team Red Miner v0.7.18 or later
  • PhoenixMiner 5.3b or later

On the command line side, there is no change about the pool address or even your wallet address. But, please verify that you have the mention etchash next to the algorithm parameter of your command line. If you need help, here is a command-line generator for Ethereum Classic mining.
